The 2025 African Unity Ambassadors Ball, themed “Unity in Diversity, Strength in Unity,” unfolded as a resounding success, drawing Excellencies, diplomats, and global leaders to honor trailblazers in African diplomacy, health, and civil rights. Broadcast journalist and VIP News Network founder Linord Moudou served as Mistress of Ceremonies, guiding attendees through a seamless evening of pomp, inspiration, and networking following the prior day’s Diaspora Business Roundtable.​

Honorees Recognized for Transformative Impact

The gala spotlighted four luminaries whose legacies embody resilience and service. Ambassador Johnnie Carson received the Kofi Annan Award, presented by Ambassador Michael Battle, for his diplomatic bridges between nations. Ambassador Andrew Young earned the Lifetime Achievement Award, with tributes from Rev. Shavon Arline-Bradley of the National Council of Negro Women highlighting his civil rights diplomacy.​

Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female head of state, was awarded the Legacy of Leadership Award, accepted by Vivian Lowery Derryck amid video remarks praising her compassion-driven strength. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus received the Nelson Mandela Award, collected by Mary Lou Valdez, for advancing global health equity, prompting a standing ovation.​

Highlights of the Ceremony and Performances

The event opened with the U.S. Air Force Color Guard and a stirring National Anthem by soprano Elizabeth Lyra Ross, accompanied by pianist Frank Conlon. Rev. George E. Mensah, Sr., of Shiloh Baptist Church, delivered the invocation, followed by a youth innovation award to TIME’s 2024 Kid of the Year, 15-year-old Heman Bekele, for his skin cancer-fighting soap prototype, presented by Dr. Teta V. Banks. A unity toast, led by Chevron’s Ani Orugboh, capped the night, transitioning into mingling.​

Diplomats received a formal roll call, underscoring international solidarity, while a special video message from host Boris Kodjoe added star power despite his absence. Organizers hailed the evening’s flawless execution and vibrant energy as a testament to Africa’s global promise.
